Cci 9mm Shotshell Glock - It's that time of year. From pigeons to ducks and geese, hunters across the country take to the fields and marshes to shoot on the wing. However, a few weeks ago I had other goals in mind. Armed with a Glock 26 and a couple of CCI 'BIG 4' cartridges, I set out to capture a Eurasian Pigeon or Pigeon that was trying to take over Mom and Dad's little farm - in flight.
Before you touch me Eurasian pigeons and doves are invasive species. That means they can be hunted year-round as pests (check state and local regulations). Not only are they outsiders; If left unchecked, they can disturb local songbird populations. English sparrows and starlings are aggressive (on the kill list).

The Eurasian collared pigeon (Streptopelia decocto), also called the collared pigeon and sometimes hyphenated as the Eurasian collared pigeon, is a species of pigeon from temperate and subtropical Asia that arrived in North America in the 1980s. In 1974, fewer than 50 European collared pigeons escaped captivity in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas. From the Bahamas, the species spread to Florida and is now found in almost every state in the United States and Mexico. In Arkansas (USA), the species was first recorded in 1989 and has since grown in numbers, now in 42 of the state's 75 counties. It spread from the southeastern corner of the state in 1997 to the northwestern corner within 5 years, covering a distance of about 500 km (310 mi) at a rate of 100 km (62 mi) per year. This is more than twice the rate. 45 km (28 mi) are seen annually in Europe.

Shells designed for rimfire or pistol ammunition are known as snakeshot for a reason. They are usually only practical at a distance of 10 feet. But these cartridges are usually loaded with #8 or #9 bullets. CCI designed the Big 4 projectiles to improve the range and penetration problems inherent in older versions.
I took apart two of the Big 4 shells to find 15 #4 shot rifling at 50 grains. The red cap, or container, comes off easily with my fingers. A plastic cup-shaped wad below the bullet is tightly sealed on the sides of the case.
I put some of the Big 4 shells in a magazine and let it sit and closed the slide. The first round was uneventful.
I decided to buy a very sensitive test equipment - a pizza box - for several rounds of pattern testing at different distances. Unfortunately, the pattern test photos were unusable, but the results were pretty clear: those little over 15-foot shells weren't going to leave a mark. It's also worth noting that the shells won't ring the action on my trusty G26. It's one shot.

As with all fishing, this experiment proved to be a waiting game. Many times I was interrupted by Mourning Doves (non-warriors) or Eurasians would surround me while maintaining a 30 yard buffer. Either way the birds knew I was up to something.
To top it off, tracking a small flying object in the sky with a pistol is terrifying. Even getting quality photos of the workout was difficult. You will immediately feel like you are breaking one of the safety rules. You eventually get used to the fact that when you pull the trigger, that little #4 shot will fly away in the wind at 20 yards.
After about two hours, a Eurasian flew by at about 20 feet and I decided to take a shot. He flew fast, right above us. I tried to guide him some distance from his nose. And…
I really wanted to come here and tell an amazing story about how I shot a feathered intruder in flight. It just wasn't meant to be. So it's time to dig for the win because I won't shoot it.
